Gerald R. Solomon
Gerald R. Solomon has served as the Samueli Foundation’s Executive Director since April, 2008. Prior to the Samueli Foundation, Solomon served as CEO of Public Health Foundation Enterprises (PHFE) for seven years, where he transformed the organization from an LA-centric provider of funding and services into national prominence. At the time of Solomon’s departure, PHFE was operating in 31 states with 1,500 employees and annual revenues exceeding $120 Million.
Since his tenure at Samueli, he has achieved many significant goals, including refining the Foundation’s strategic plan, and helping establish a secondary operating foundation entitled Anaheim Ducks Foundation to develop a sports philanthropic approach to address community health disparity issues through the use of hockey. Solomon has developed long range collaborative community initiatives including: local, state and regional networks addressing STEM education deficiencies within the K – 16 continuum, and local and national programs to broaden the healthcare dialogue to focus on a true health, wellness and well-being approach through integrative medicine practices.
Solomon currently serves on several Boards and Committees, including: UCLA’s School of Engineering Dean’s Advisory Council; UCI’s School of Engineering Dean’s Advisory Council; UCI’s Dept of Education Chair’s Advisory Committee; chair of the national STEM Funders Network; chair of OC STEM Initiative; the California Department of Education Foundation; and actively supports and works with Grantmakers in Health and Grantmakers For Education on local, regional and national issues.
Previous work has included service on the Board of Directors of: the NACCHO-CDC national accreditation committee developing standards for public health departments; OCHNA – Orange County Health Needs Assessment; Chair of CMPHL – the California Medical and Public Health Leadership Group; and Treasurer of Alliance for Nonprofit Management headquartered in Washington, DC.
Solomon offers a diverse executive leadership background, having served as President and CEO of several highly successful nonprofit as well as for-profit organizations, including a distinguished 18 year career as a civil trial attorney and Judge Pro Tem. Solomon’s nonprofit experience includes serving as President of a Child Abuse Prevention Foundation, CEO of a multi-state residential and outpatient drug and alcohol treatment program, and as Executive Director of the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce.
